Funding Imbalance

Out of 248 Doctoral Universities considered, 39 were MSIs. These MSIs include 19 HSIs and 11 HBCUs. Looking at average amount of funding per faculty in this Doctoral Universities, we see a huge gap between MSIs and Non-MSI Universities. An average faculty member at a Non-MSI Institute has 287k dollars worth of annual funding. For MSIs however the amount is reduced to only 160K dollars of annual funding per faculty. This disparity becomes even worse for HSIs(152K) and HBCUs(64K).

Out of the 39 MSIs only two have a Average Funding per faculty more than the average of Non-MSI. These Institutes are UC Santa Barbara and University of Alaska, Fairbanks.
If we consider the Average Funding per faculty at a Non-MSI as a baseline, we can infer that there is almost 3 Billion dollars of Funding missing for these 39 MSIs The Following plot shows Expected vs Actual Funding different MSIs receive. HSIs are only receiving about half of the funding they should receive and HBCUs are only receiving a third.
